Flower Journey

Flower Journey portrays a colorful Qing dynasty vase rich in powerful symbolic decorations. According to the Chinese Five Elements Theory, the color black is associated with water, green or blue with wood, red with fire, white with metal, and yellow with earth. At the same time, these elements, or phases, represent the four seasons and transitional seasonal periods as well as the planets of Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Mercury. Within this cosmic context, these phases are in a complex relationship with different aspects of nature, appearing as flowers or dragons in Chinese iconography.  But why not take the interpretation to another level? As traditional and contemporary techniques mix, we cannot continue to interpret traditional images only within a traditional context. In contemporary cultures, butterflies have lost their ancient symbolic meaning associated with the human soul, but are now charged with those of popular culture. Flowers, dragons, and vivid colors are now associated with psychedelic dreams and hallucinations. The appropriation of traditional artistic elements necessarily implies the possibility of free interpretation. This contemporary concept of open work is often expressed in the work of Liu Dao: the picture, a freestyle text, and the viewer’s imagination are each only one element of a broader context.

The spirit and purpose behind all Liu Dao artworks, literary contributions, and exhibitions is collaboration. The group places emphasis on interaction in order to engage artists, curators and technicians in the process of creating and experiencing art focusing on collective rather than individual values, with the direct aim of benefiting a young Chinese contemporary art scene promotionally and creatively.
An appealing comparison is to the film industry: the island6 gallery acts as the producer for the artists (actors), curators (film directors), while utilising the skills of cameramen, set designers, choreographers, scenographers, and writers. The digital artworks produced by island6 also use postproduction editors, such as Affect Effect experts or sound designers. Each artwork and exhibition has a cast with credits for people of different skills.
